Extremely disappointing. Sign outside says award winning food and bar snacks. Walked in on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm to be looked down upon and told we arent serving food. And the only bar snacks on offer were crisps. Unfriendly and wouldnt return.
I wanted to like this pub because it so close to where we holiday, but today it was a bad experience. Let me explain. The pub was quite empty being a Tuesday I suppose....so we sat in the lovely restaurant section. Slowly people started arriving. The lunch menu for 16.95 for two courses was temptingly good value because most mains are about 22. We both started with the cauliflower soup. Creamy and tasty. No problem. The main of Venison Ballotin (???) was awfully dry and tasteless. It is like a piece of bacon (burnt and dry) wrapped around a piece of Christmas turkey stuffing. Also tasteless. It sits on a bed of dry boiled kale! Yuk! Kale is the worst veggie in the best of time anyway, but one could tweak it with a sauce, some olive oil or lemon juice???No. No. No. No such luck.I asked for salt and pepper. Didnt help.I asked for olive oil. Horror horror. The manager said they dont have olive oil. What???A kitchen without olive oil??? I gave up.We chose desert hoping it would at least make up for the other two dishes.Well, rhubarb at the best of time is still a tart useless veggie (dare you say fruit!!!) but used as a base for a crumble? Well it should be fine, youd think.No.It was sour and soggy. The crumble was few and far between. The best part was the Guernsey ice cream. Did the manager care? I dont think so.
Over-expected based on online reviews and under-delivered. Beautiful decoration, but strange service. Simple, no-frills and straight-forward menu. We were expecting a more insipiring menu, not only meats and sides. However, very well executed. Worth a shot if you are local, but don't drive 2 hours for the food.
Location is great and so is the decoration. The service is nice at first sight but eventually becomes too invasive (interrupt a conversation is not exactly what Im expecting). Food was good but not that amazing. All in all we had a good experience but were probably expecting too much!
Wonderful service, wonderful food and wonderful building. Cannot fault anything! The kitchen kindly made an alteration to my wife's starter which was very much appreciated and then ever so kindly made her a souffl for dessert as it is her favourite, all this was done without hesitation, a true sign of a great kitchen. Thank you for a wonderful night guys.
